Basic Keelboat Online Ashore course

This is for students who can't make it to in an class session.

This course includes 14 hours of home study to prepare you for your practical session. Using guided readings, and several recorded class videos, you cover the course material in the comfort of your home. Course fee includes textbook, use of online resources, and Sail Canada fees.

Basic Keelboat Cruising

Ready to take command of your own vessel? On the practical portion of the Basic Cruising course you will learn to sail safely as a skipper or crew member on a keelboat of 6-10m, in moderate wind conditions, by day. This course includes a minimum of 18 hours on the water.


Please ensure you have attended the ashore session before attempting the afloat session.


Instructor to student ratio is 3:1 offering lots of hands-on time.


No pre-requisites however students with little boating experience may find this course challenging. Students are expected to supply their own PFD, and basic sailing equipment.

Intermediate Keelboat Cruising

Ashore in Alberta, Practical on Vancouver Island


This is a 6 Day, 5 Night live-aboard cruise and learn in the southern Gulf Islands aboard a 34 foot vessel. Departing from Vancouver Island students will participate in the operation of the vessel as both crew and skipper. The vessel will be operated under sail and power while making daytime passages and building the skills and experience needed for live-aboard cruises and bareboat charter. Ports visited may include: Ladysmith, Montague Harbour, Ganges, Maple Bay, and Nanaimo depending on weather. Requirements prior to taking the standard: • Sail Canada Basic Cruising Standard, • Sail Canada Basic Coastal Navigation or Coastal Navigation Standard, • ROC(M): VHF with DSC endorsement, which can be challenged while onboard. • Pleasure Craft Operator’s Card (or equivalent) Recommended prior to taking the standard: • Recognized standard first aid and CPR certificate, • Sail Canada Intermediate Coastal Navigation Standard.


Ashore learning will be completed as guided self learning with a few online classes leading up to the cruise. During the cruise an in depth review of vessel systems will be covered as hands on activities.


Note: To maximize the likelihood of successfully completing the Intermediate Cruising Standard, a student should: a) Have experience as skipper of at least ten day sails (or equivalent), b) Be able to consistently use the knowledge and demonstrate the skills learned in the Basic Cruising Standard and the Basic Coastal Navigation Standard.


Successful completion of this course can meet the requirements to charter a vessel abroad. Alberta Sailing Association and Sail Canada Course Levy included in course registration. Course fee includes the cost of basic provisions while onboard. Not included is the cost for any personal snacks, or meals ashore. Transportation cost to and from departure marina is the responsibility of the student.

Basic Coastal Navigation

This introductory Standard covers a basic knowledge of navigation theory and is the initial Standard in a comprehensive set of Standards offered by Sail Canada on vessel navigation. The curriculum covers the role of the navigator and introduces the publications, aids to navigation and tools and techniques that support planning and safe passage making. The student is exposed to basic plotting and position determination methods. This Standard covers information key to the effective use of electronics including GNSS & AIS. Tides, Currents, Dead reckoning, and position fixes are covered along with chart plotting. The standard requires a minimum of 15 hours of instruction and a written exam. Note - Course requires the use of charts, supplies, plotter, and dividers which must be purchased separately for approx $120. Instructor will provide links to these items which will be shipped directly to student.

Intermediate Coastal Navigation

This Standard builds on the basic knowledge of navigation theory presented in the Sail Canada Basic Coastal Navigation Standard. This is the second course in a comprehensive set of courses offered by Sail Canada on vessel navigation. The curriculum focus is on near shore navigation and covers position determination methods using non- electronic means as well as methods for dealing with current and leeway. The course also covers the determination of intermediate tidal heights and introduces the student to the basics of passage planning and to the impact that the Collision Regulations may have on navigational practice. Students will use the navigation tools purchased in their Basic course, and will require two charts (approx $42) in addition to the tuition cost.
